Hiroshige One Hundred Famous Views of Edo - Praca zbiorowa - książka
Producent: Taschen
Utagawa Hiroshige, active during the late Edo period, is recognized as one of the final masters of the ukiyo-e artistic movement. Translating to "pictures of the floating world," ukiyo-e flourished in Japan from the 17th to the 19th century, shaping the Western perception of Japanese art. This style often highlighted the vibrant and indulgent life of Edo, now known as Tokyo, showcasing subjects such as beautiful women, theater actors, and the serene cityscape. Hiroshige's renown comes particularly from his landscape works, with his acclaimed series "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo" (1856-1858), which vividly captured diverse scenes of the city across different seasons, reflecting everything from lively markets to picturesque cherry blossom gardens. This collection is replicated in a traditional Japanese binding, sourced from one of the finest intact sets of original woodblock prints held by the Ota Memorial Museum of Art in Tokyo. Each of the 120 illustrations is accompanied by descriptions, inviting readers to delve into these dynamic landscapes that significantly influenced movements like Japonisme, and impacted artists such as Vincent van Gogh and James McNeill Whistler. Lorenz Bichler, who studied in Zurich and Beijing, became an assistant professor of politics at New York University after receiving scholarships to study in Japan. He has been actively involved in academia and freelance sinology. Melanie Trede, prior to earning her doctorate at the University of Heidelberg, worked at Gakushuin University and later taught at New York University before her current professorship in Far Eastern art history at Heidelberg.
