True Crime Detective Magazines - Eric Godtland - książka
Producent: Taschen
During the peak of the Jazz Age, when the Prohibition era transformed law-abiding citizens into lawbreakers and made criminals famous, the United States saw the emergence of true crime detective magazines. The first of these, True Detective, appeared in 1924. A decade later, in 1934, amidst the Great Depression, notorious figures such as Machine Gun Kelly, Bonnie and Clyde, Baby Face Nelson, and John Dillinger captivated the public, boosting the popularity of these magazines. Law enforcement officers and criminals alike wanted to feature on their pages. Even J. Edgar Hoover, the head of the FBI, contributed regularly to these publications, which became informally known as "Dickbooks," a nod to the slang term for a detective. Over time, the focus of these magazines shifted. With the end of Prohibition, the conclusion of the Depression, and the capture or death of many infamous criminals, the magazines began to emphasize provocative content. Their covers featured images of alluring women in revealing clothing to maintain their appeal and drive sales.
