Jacques Devaulx. Nautical Works - Elisabeth Hebert - książka
Producent: Taschen
Five centuries after the founding of the historic port city of Le Havre, TASCHEN has released a facsimile edition of the remarkable illuminated manuscript Les premières œuvres de Jacques Devaulx, pilote en la marine. Originally published in 1583 by Jacques Devaulx, a "Naval Pilot to the King" from Le Havre, this work is dedicated to the Duke of Joyeuse. It brings together nautical, astronomical, and cartographic concepts, along with Devaulx’s own detailed notes and observations collected during his career as a seafarer, hydrographer, cosmographer, and cartographer. Intended as both an encyclopedic guide for sailors and an impressive maritime artifact for royal audiences, the manuscript's richly annotated and decorated pages provide insights into the naval and cosmographic tools and methods of the time. These include astrolabes, nautical charts of the Atlantic, tables of daily tides, astrological charts, and calculations for solar altitude. Additionally, it contains Devaulx’s volvelles, rotating paper charts considered an early form of the analog computer. These pages capture a snapshot of the era’s maritime knowledge and give a glimpse into the practical demands of navigation during the Renaissance.
