Ijon Tichy, an unfortunate cosmonaut, has returned to Earth to participate in the Eighth Futurological Congress, located in a smog-choked, crowded Costa Rica. He is sequestered with a diverse group of scientists in a luxury hotel, which somewhat bizarrely is equipped with tear gas sprinklers, meant as a precaution against potential chaos. However, chaos does ensue when a revolution breaks out, compounded by hallucinogenic substances contaminating the water supply. Amidst the turmoil, Tichy is shot, subsequently frozen, and ultimately awakened to a future beyond his wildest dreams.
